Description
Location
Cosmonauts Alley is a memorial pedestrian street that starts from Mira Avenue at the intersection with Ostankino passage and passes in the north-east direction to VDNH. The alley was laid so that when moving from the center of Moscow visually continued Prospect Mira and opened up the prospect for an obelisk to the Conquerors of Space [2] . At the end of the alley is a monument to Konstantin Tsiolkovsky by sculptor Andrei Faydysh-Krandievsky and architects A. N. Kolchin and Mikhail Barshch . Behind it is the main obelisk monument, in its basement is the Cosmonautics Museum . To the right of the monument is the southern exit from the VDNH metro station, and then the main lobby [2] . After the construction of a car overpass above the VDNKh metro station in 2000, the architectural ensemble of the alley was disrupted - it lost its symmetry and panoramic view. Part of the green zone disappeared, astronauts busts were surrounded by asphalt [6] .
Monuments
The alley was designed by architects Mikhail Barshch and A.N. Kolchin. According to their plan, along the pedestrian part should be located monuments to the pioneers of astronautics. The decision to establish busts was made by a resolution of the Executive Committee of the Moscow City Council of Deputies of February 28, 1967 [4] .
On April 9, 2017, four new busts were installed in the alley in honor of twice the heroes of the Soviet Union, astronauts Alexander Alexandrov , Valentin Lebedev , Svetlana Savitskaya and Vladimir Solovyov . All of them attended the opening ceremony. The architects Vasily Perfiliev and A. K. Tikhonov, sculptors A. V. Balashov, A. S. Zabaluev, I. N. Novikov and E. I. Kazanskaya worked on the project [4] .
