He graduated from the Vienna Conservatory ( 1873 ), where he studied first with Karl Schlesinger , and after his death with Heinrich Rohver .
From 1873 he played in the orchestra of one of the opera houses, then, until 1903 , in the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra . In 1876 - 1880 cellist Helmesberger Quartet , then in 1884 - 1900 - Quartet Rosa .
February 22, 1890 participated in the premiere of the piano trio of Johannes Brahms Op. 8 (originally written by the composer in 1854 and dramatically revised 36 years later), together with the author (piano) and Arnold Rose (violin). On November 11 of the same year, in the Quartet, Rose performed the premiere of Brahms' Second String Quintet Op. 111 (at the request of Hummer, Brahms changed, only for this premiere, the dynamic instructions in the first part of the quintet, so that the initial solo of the cello sounded more advantageous to the soloist) [1] .
From 1877 he taught at the Vienna Conservatory; among his students was Rosa’s older brother, Edward .
