Content
Geography
Three quarters of the province is occupied by mountains. In the north, the Monferato Lowland is characterized by a large number of hills and valleys along which the Po and Tanaro rivers flow. In the center of the province is a fertile plain, crossed by the rivers Tanaro , Bormida and their tributaries. In the southwest, Alessandria ends with the hills of Val Bormida, Val d'Herro and Val d'Orba, which continue to connect with the Apennines .
In the west, Alessandria borders on the province of Asti , in the north with Vercelli , in the east with the region of Lombardy and in the south with Liguria .
History
By royal decree on October 23, 1859, an alliance of the communes of Alessandria, Tortona and Casale , already belonging to the department of Alessandria , was established; and Asti , Akui Terme and Novi , disconnected from the department of Genoa. In 1935, the province of Asti was separated from Alessandria.
Economics
The main industrial centers are located around the cities of Alessandria , Torton , Novi Ligure and Casale Monferrato . The main manufacturing sectors are the metal and jewelry industries. Alessandria also has developed tourism .
Culture
In the commune of Varallo there is the religious center Sacro Monte di Crea ( Italian: Sacro Monte di Crea ), where a basilica has been preserved, which contains the masterpieces of many famous masters and several dozen chapels intended for Christian pilgrimages. In each of these chapels, dedicated to a separate episode from the Old and New Testaments, fresco paintings are combined into a whole with a painted sculpture of wood, knock and terracotta. Sacro Monte di Crea is part of the Sacro Monte Ensemble (Holy Mountains) in Piedmont and Lombardy, a UNESCO World Heritage Site .
