Biography

Mike Hodges usually works in the genre of fiction or crime thriller. His most recognized directorial work was the film “ Remove Carter, ” which in 1999 ranked sixteenth on the list of the hundred best British films compiled by the British Film Institute [1] , and in 2004, Total Film was named the best British film of all time. In 2005, the University of West Anglia at Bristol awarded Hodges the degree of Doctor honoris causa .

Most of the Hodges films did not have box office success, and were perceived differently by criticism. For example, the Flash Gordon movie that failed at the box office, the adaptation of the comic book of the same name in 1980, at the box office failure, became a cult film, which, for example, the famous Rotten Tomatoes website included the film in the list of the hundred best fantastic movie works ever made (the film's rating is 83%) .

The film “I Fall Asleep When I Die”, released in 2003, was noted by the famous critic Roger Ebert, who gave the film three and a half stars out of four, noting the depth of character and symbolism in the film. An interesting fact is that Hodges, along with Mickey Rourke, refused the film “Waste Prayer,” because many scenes, including the monologues confessing the hero Rourke, were cut out.

Another interesting work by Mike Hodges, the film "Black Rainbow", shot in 1989, was awarded two prizes for the best screenplay (written by Hodges) and the best female role at the Sitges International Film Festival, and the picture won the main prize at the Fantasporto festival for the best film in 1990. Some critics have even called Black Rainbow the best Hodges movie since Remove Carter.

In 2005, a British film was released on British television entitled Mike Hodges: An Uncompromising Poet with the Gift of Foresight, which faithfully talks about the significance of the director for British cinema.

He is a fan of the works of J. G. Bellard.

Hodges was twice married, has two children from his first marriage.
