Montérégy ( fr. Montérégie ) is an administrative region of Quebec , located on the south bank of the St. Lawrence River , opposite Montreal and on the border with the United States . Its name is derived from the hills of Montenegro , which are completely located on its territory, except for the mountain of Mont-Royal . The toponym Montérégie is a romanized form of the name Mont-Royal ( Mons regius - "Royal Mountain"). The term was created by geologist Frank Dawson Adams in 1903 to denote the corresponding petrographic region [1] . The region is crossed by several large rivers (for example, Richelieu , Yamask and Akadi). It consists of 14 counties and 178 local municipalities .

Monterezhi is a territory uniting three strictly administrative subregions and several counties. The territorial administration of the region is thus carried out in three different Regional Conferences of Deputies (RKD), independent within its territory: Longueu (south of Montreal), East of Montenegro and Vallée du Aux Saint Laurent (Surue). Each subregion is organized on the same basis as the other administrative areas of Quebec.
The region is both urban (second in population) and agricultural. Its economy is based on agriculture and the production of goods and services. Tourism also plays a significant role.
Since ancient times, the administrative territory of the parishes of Monterezi belonged to the Saint-Zhansk and Longuy Diocese .
