It flows north. In the river valley there are humid tropical forests [1] . It is navigable 160 km from the mouth [1] , including 105 km, to the port of Linden - for ocean-going vessels .
In the lower reaches of the river there was a Dutch colony of Demerara , under which sugarcane plantations were established, which are still valid today. The name of the river is also associated with the production of rum and cane sugar.
Bauxite deposits are located in the Demerara Valley [1] .
