It flows along the Great Plain of China through the city of Tianjin . On the tributaries of Haihe is the Chinese capital Beijing . At the mouth of the river in the late Minsk and Qing periods, Dagu Fortresses were located, designed to protect the capital from invasion from the sea.

In total, about 11% of the Chinese population lives in the Haihe basin, and 10% of the country's arable land is located, so up to 70% of the river flow is used for household needs.

Through the Great Canal, Haihe is connected to the Yangtze and Yellow River . Before the construction of the canal, the Baihe, Weihe and Ziyahhe rivers had their own deltas, however, only one channel was left for a larger catchment during the construction process.

The basin area is 319 thousand km², water flow rate is 650 m³ / s. The average annual runoff is 23 km³, which is half of the Yellow River runoff and only the thirteenth of the Yangtze runoff. Haihe is fueled mainly by rains; in summer, floods are observed on it. The water in Haihe (as in Yellow River) is very muddy due to severe erosion in the upper reaches. This is the reason for large sediments in the lower reaches of the river, the channel of which annually rises by an average of 0.1 meters. To reduce the negative effects of floods , reservoirs and special drainage channels were created.

Haihe is currently the most polluted river in China [1] . In recent years, due to the growth of cities and industry in the Haihe River Basin, its volume has greatly decreased. Many small and part of the large tributaries are almost dry, which further increases the degree of pollution of the river in the lower reaches. The lack of water in Haihe may be solved by a project to transfer water from south to north .
