Kaohsiung [3] (高雄Gāoxióng ) is a city in southwest Taiwan . The third largest city on the island with a population of about 2.7 million people [4] . Large port and industrial center.

Content
Geography and climate
Kaohsiung is located in the southwestern part of the island, on the shores of the Taiwan Strait . The central areas are concentrated around Kaohsiung Bay, which is home to the island of Chijin, which serves as a natural pier. The Ai River flows through the Old Town and central areas, falling into the bay. To the north of the bay of Kaohsiung there is also a military bay of Zhoyin. A characteristic feature of the city’s relief is the Shoushan Hills, located north of Kaohsiung Bay.
The climate of the city is characterized as tropical with average temperatures ranging from 18.6 to 28.7 ° C and average humidity from 60 to 81%. The average annual rainfall is about 1,785 mm, most of which falls between May and September.

Economy
Kaohsiung is an important port and large industrial center. The Linghai Industrial Park, covering an area of 2,200 hectares, located on the coast and built in the mid-1970s, includes a steel and shipbuilding plant, a petrochemical complex, and enterprises from other industries. There is also a refinery in the city, production of aluminum, cement, fertilizers, sugar, bricks, tiles, paper, etc. is well developed. There is a canning industry, including fish and fruit processing.
Kaohsiung Port has the largest natural bay in Taiwan. It is the largest container port of the island and the sixth largest in the world [6] . For 2007, the port had a carrying capacity of 10.2 million units in a twenty-foot equivalent [7] . The new container terminal, which is currently under construction, will allow the port to increase its capacity by another 2 million TEU by 2013.
Transportation
Kaohsiung International Airport is Taiwan’s third largest airport, accounting for about 15% of all international flights in the country. Flights include destinations such as Bangkok, Beijing, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Osaka, Tokyo, Macao, Changsha, Taipei, etc.
There is a metro , the construction of which was begun in 2001, and the first 2 lines began to operate since 2008. In addition, there are light rail systems, a bus network is developed. With the north of the island of Kaohsiung is connected by high-speed railway .
