GP-4u

Civilian gas mask GP-4u (slang " Green Elephant ") - a filtering tool for individual protection of the respiratory system, eyes and face of a person. Civilian gas mask GP-4u is one of the most common civilian gas masks in the USSR. Produced from 1955 to 1974.

Content

Purpose

The civilian gas mask GP-4u is designed to protect the respiratory organs, eyes and face of the civilian population and the personnel of civil defense formations from exposure to toxic and radioactive substances, as well as pathogenic microbes and toxins .

Design

The working part of the gas mask includes the front part with a connecting tube and a gas filtering and absorbing box.

Gas filtering and absorbing box is used to clean the inhaled air from toxic and radioactive substances, as well as pathogenic microbes and toxins . Air purification is carried out by a special absorber and a smoke filter, with which the box is equipped. Gas filtering and absorbing box has a cylindrical shape. To increase the mechanical strength, outer transverse protrusions ("ridges") are made on the box body. On the filter-absorbing box cover there is a threaded neck for attaching the box to the front of the gas mask. At the bottom of the filter-absorbing box there is a round hole through which inhaled air enters.

The front part serves to bring the air purified in the gas mask to the respiratory system and to protect the eyes and face from toxic substances, as well as from pathogenic microbes and toxins. The front part of the gas mask consists of a rubber mask with a spectacle unit, a system of webs, a valve box and a connecting tube. Has three growths (sizes): 1, 2 and 3

The valve box serves to distribute the flow of inhaled and exhaled air. It has one inhalation valve and two exhalation valves. In the lower part of the chamber of the valve box there is a removable screen with holes designed to protect the valve from mechanical damage during use and from falling out.

The connecting tube is used to connect the mask to the gas box. The upper end of the tube is tightly fixed to the valve box pipe, the lower one is connected with the nipple and union nut to the neck of the gas box. The connecting tube is made of rubber coated with knitwear and has transverse folds (corrugations), giving it the necessary elasticity and elasticity during bending.

The mask is mounted on the head with the help of the natalik and the tesme system, which consists of two frontal non-stretching, four temporal and two occipital - rubber tesms, providing a good fit of the mask to the face. Tesami tension is regulated with the help of mobile buckles available on the frontal braid, and fixed buckles on the occipital braid.

The gas mask bag is used to store and carry the gas mask. In the context of the use of chemical weapons, the bag is also a preliminary filter for cleaning large particles of radioactive dust entering the gas mask. The bag has two compartments: one for the filter-absorbing box, the other for the mask and wax “pencil” used to protect the glasses from fogging. At the bottom of the bag, in the compartment for the gas box, two wooden planks are fixed, which facilitate the access of air to the gas box. The bag closes with a flap and fastens with a button or strap. To carry the gas mask over the shoulder, a shoulder strap with a mobile buckle is sewn to the bag. On the edges of the bag, facing when carrying the gas mask to the body, sewn fabric braid or cord and a metal half-ring or fabric eye, designed to fasten the bag to the body when wearing the gas mask in the “ready” and “combat” positions.

Options

The set of civilian gas mask GP-4u includes:

  • front part - 1 piece;
  • filtering and absorbing box - 1 piece;
  • gas mask bag - 1 piece;
  • anti-fogging agent for glasses of the eyeglass unit (“pencil”) - 1 piece;
  • instruction for use - 1 piece per packing place;
  • passport - 1 piece per batch.

Additional Information

The civilian gas mask GP-4u does not provide protection against ammonia and its derivatives, organic vapors and gases with a boiling point less than +65 ° C (such as: methane, ethane, acetylene, ethylene oxide and others), carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides.

In the mid-70s of the XX century, the civilian gas mask GP-4u was discontinued due to the transition to the use of a more modern civilian gas mask GP-5.
