Story
The novel tells about Drud - a man endowed with the wonderful gift of flying , like flying in a dream, and about his persecution by the soulless rich people who rule the world.
In a certain city, an announcement appeared that the circus would give the only performance of the “Double Star Man”, who would fly in the air without any adaptations. Since this artist does not take money for his performance, the secret police became interested in him. Various rumors about the identity of the guest performer crawled around the city, and all tickets were sold out immediately, even at a triple price. The circus gathered all the nobility of the city, among which was the niece of Minister Runa Beguem.
The performance of the Double Star Man, or Druda (that was his name), made a sensation, and after speaking on the way home he was attacked, which killed one of the attackers. Meanwhile, strange events take place in one of the hotels in the city of Rome: a tenant got into a room locked with a key. It was none other than Drud, who lived in a hotel under an assumed name, hiding from people so as not to become an object of scientific research. The owner of the hotel, on the orders of the authorities, poured sleeping pills into Druda's coffee, and the ambulance called up brought him to prison.
Runa cannot forget Drud and asks her uncle to allow him to visit him. She knows about the whereabouts of Drud from her maid, who, in turn, learned about what happened from the employees of the Rome Hotel. Uncle explains that it is necessary to investigate the Drud phenomenon, but after learning that the niece has a secret passion for the latter, she agrees to give permission for a date.
Rune comes to the chained Drude and gives him two files, so that with their help he can free himself from the shackles. Drud tricks the sentry to unlock his camera and flies out the open door.
Runa's help aroused a reciprocal feeling in Druda and he secretly flew to her to express his gratitude and respect. But, having learned that Runa wants to conquer the whole world with the help of his unusual gift, he flies away with chagrin.
In the spring of next year, 19-year-old Tavi arrives in Liss , who found a companion's place with a certain Thorpe. On the train, Tavi meets a man named Crookes. Without waiting for Thorpe at the station, Tavi arrives at the indicated address, where it turns out that Thorpe suddenly died from an aortic rupture. The widow of Thorpe rejoices in his death, as she hated her husband because of his constant hobbies with young companions. She leads Tavi into his office with books, mostly of erotic content.
Without taking the money offered to her and thinking about how to return home, Tavi goes to a performance at the Ballooners Club. There she meets Crookes. Crookes lectured on how to fly on an apparatus similar to a swan. To the chairman’s question, “Who believes in Crookes' flight?” Only Tavi raises his hand and supports the speaker. The flight took place.
Returning home, Tavi cannot forget Crookes. As she prepares for her birthday, she constantly recalls it. Tavi come to congratulate the guests. In the midst of the fun, Tavi is arrested, but with the help of Crookes she manages to escape. Crookes, who turns out to be Drud, takes the girl to a safe place. He explains to her that they wanted to arrest her, thinking that she knows about his whereabouts. Now they are together.
A stranger comes to Rune and offers her to destroy Druda together. Exhausted from unrequited love, Runa gives the stranger money to kill Drud. After a while, they meet again, and the stranger reports that he failed to achieve the goal. Going outside, Runa sees a bloodied man lying on the ground, who, allegedly, fell out of the window. Drood is dead, and Runa is now free.
Value
The flight symbolizes the creative freedom of man - alien, unusual and even hostile to the world of corruption, inertness and vulgarity. Drud in the novel makes a series of bright speeches, urging those present to accept the highest, truly human values in return for indulging greed and anger.
Most likely, Green’s novel inspired Alexander Belyaev to create the novel “Ariel” .
