Story
London gangster Jack Carter arrives in his native provincial Doncaster at the funeral of brother Frank. Everyone is convinced that his brother committed suicide, but Carter doubts this and begins his own investigation. Carter’s London owners are ordering him to return, as they have their own business with local bandits. Carter refuses. He finds out that Frank's daughter starred in a porn film , and when Frank found out about it, he was killed. Carter wants revenge.

History of creation and publication
The plot is based on a case known as “the murder of a one-armed bandit,” when in January 1967 , Dennis Stafford and Michael Louvalho killed their gaming business partner Angus Sibbet [1] . Initially, the novel was released under the title Jack's Return Home . After the success of the film “ Remove Carter ”, based on the novel, with Michael Kane in the title role, the novel began to be published under the title “Remove Carter”. In Russian, the novel was published in 2005 by the publishing house U-Factoria , translated by Maria Pavlycheva.
Lewis wrote two more Jack Carter novels: Jack Carter's Law ( 1974 ) and Jack Carter and the Mafia Pigeon ( 1977 ).
