Description

A series of 7 similar research ships was founded in the mid-1960s on the initiative of I. D. Papanin and M. V. Keldysh .

The design of the hull and the power plant of the vessel were based on the serial model of the passenger ship, the design and construction of the vessel were produced by the Matias Tezen shipyard in Wismar ( GDR ) [1] .

The length of the vessel was 123 m, width 17 m, draft 5 m, displacement 6800 tons. The crew numbered 70 people, not counting 80 people. research staff.

Launching took place in 1966 . In the course of research activities, Akademik Kurchatov visited 53 expeditionary expeditions, covering almost 2 million kilometers.
