The Golden Lion ( Italian: Leone d'Oro ) is the main award of the Venice Film Festival . Introduced in 1949 . Prior to this, the highest award of the Venice Film Festival was first the “ Mussolini Cup ” ( Italian. Coppa Mussolini , 1934 - 1942 ), and then the “Grand International Prize of Venice” ( Italian. Gran Premio Internazionale di Venezia ), awarded only two times - in 1947 and 1948 years . In 1969-1979, the Golden Lion was not awarded.

Four directors twice became winners of the Golden Lion - these are Andre Cayat ( 1950 , 1960 ), Louis Mal ( 1980 , 1987 ), Zhang Yimou ( 1992 , 1999 ) and Ang Lee ( 2005 , 2007 ).
Three times the prize was won by paintings in Russian ( 1962 - “ Ivan Childhood ”, dir. Andrei Tarkovsky ; 1991 - “ Urga - Territory of Love ”, dir. Nikita Mikhalkov , 2003 - “ Return ”, dir. Andrey Zvyagintsev ). The film “ Faust ” by Russian director Alexander Sokurov also received a prize, but was shot in German.
The festival is held annually on the island of Lido.
