Content
Story
The times of the agrarian reform of the second half of the XIX century in the Russian Empire. Land surveyors come to neighboring volosts owned by a rich landowner. They will have to re-establish the boundaries of the peasant allotments.
The rich tenant of the baronial land Pratnieks convinced his neighbors of the need to cajole the visiting officials and give them a good bribe. With his help, the adoptive parents of the girl to whom he was wooing, were able to take away the land of poor Caspar - the successful rival Pratnieks in favor of the beautiful Liene.
After the ruin of Caspar, Prantnieks wants Liene to agree to be his wife. He does not know that Liene has already made her choice. Caspar, adopted by mistake for a swindler Grabowski, becomes a victim of robbers. Liene’s heartbroken Liene, cursed by her mother for refusing to obey the will of her parents and marrying Pratnieks, goes mad and commits suicide.
