Physico-geographical characteristics
The region of Abruzzi is located in the middle of the Apennine Peninsula on the Adriatic coast, about 100 km east of Rome . The area of the region is 10 763 km² (13th place in Italy), two-thirds of the territory is occupied by mountains. The highest points of Abruzzi are Corno Grande (2914 m) and Monte Amaro (2795 m).
The capital of the Abruzzi region is the city of L'Aquila . The most significant city in the region is Pescara , located on the Adriatic Sea .
The territory of the Abruzzi region is characterized by a variety of landscapes: these are mountains in the central part of the peninsula, the hilly coast of the Adriatic Sea with numerous beaches. The largest lake in the region is Skanno .
History
The territory of Abruzzi at one time was part of the Kingdom of Naples and the Kingdom of Both Sicilies . Since 1861 - as part of a single Italy , first the kingdom , and since 1946 - the republic. Until 1963, Abruzzi with the modern region of Molise constituted a single region of Abruzzi e Molise .
Population
Although Abruzzi's population density has increased over the past decades, it is still significantly lower than the national population — 120.84 people / km², compared with 198.8 people / km² on average in Italy (2008). At the provincial level, population density is also unevenly distributed. As of 2008, the province of Pescara is the most densely populated - 260.1 people / km², while in L'Aquila the population density reaches only 61.3 people / km², although this province is the largest in area. After several decades of indigenous emigration from the region, the main feature of the 1980s of the XX century. became a significant influx of immigrants from third world countries. Population growth is explained solely by migration processes, whereas directly in Abruzzi since 1991 the number of deaths has been steadily greater than the number of births (with the exception of 1999, when these rates were equal). [4] In 2008, according to estimates by the Italian National Institute of Statistics ISTAT , 59,749 immigrants of foreign origin live in Abruzzi, which is 4.5% of the total population of the region.
The most serious demographic imbalance is observed between the inland mountainous regions and the coastal strip. The largest province of L'Aquila , being completely inland, is cut off from the sea and has the lowest population density. The constant internal migration of the Abruzzi population from the mountains to the sea led to the almost complete urbanization of the entire coastal strip, especially in the provinces of Teramo and Chieti . The negative consequences of this process for the internal regions were the impoverishment and demographic aging of the population, which is reflected in the level of business activity primarily in the province of L'Aquila, which in many respects is the lowest in comparison with other provinces of the region. The policy of stimulating economic development in the region has led to the creation of industrial zones, some of which ( Vasto , Avezzano , Karsoli , Jissi ) have made real progress, while others ( L'Aquila ) have faced serious problems after the initial success. Some economic zones, for example, Sulmona and Guardiagrele , developed more or less stably, without significant disruptions. Outside these industrial zones, agriculture and tourism remain the main activity. [four]
