During his lifetime, David V was titled, but some Georgian church historians now consider it established that in the 15th century there was another Catholicos with the name David, and consider his predecessor Elijah David VI [1] .
Biography
Born on March 24, 1903 in the village of Mirotsminda, Shorapansky district, Kutaisi province (now Kharagaulsky municipality of Georgia).
He studied at the monastery of Shio Mgvimsky in Chiatura , passed the exam for a priest at the age of 15 (he was not subject to ordination as a minor). It is known that he was married. In 1927 he was ordained a deacon and the next day a priest . From 1930 he served in Tbilisi, in the Sioni Cathedral, then in the Kvashveti church.
In 1956, Khariton Devdarianiโs father was blessed by Catholicos Melchizedek III for episcopal ministry, was tonsured as a monk with the name David, and was ordained bishop of Margvetsky and Urbnisky .
On January 10, 1960, under the will of the deceased Melchizedek III, he was declared his successor, but refused from humility.
On February 18, 1962, he was elevated to the rank of Metropolitan of Urbnis, in 1965-1966 he received both ecclesiastical orders of the Georgian Orthodox Church (GOC) - St. George and St. Nina. He taught Old Georgian and Church Slavonic languages โโin the Mtskheta Theological Seminary .
After the death of Melchizedek III's successor, Ephraim II , he was elected Catholicos-Patriarch on July 1, 1972.
According to the materials spread in Georgian samizdat , the election of David V was based on the fake testament of Patriarch Ephraim (in fact, according to rumors, he declared Elijah (Shiolashvili) to be his successor, who was elected Catholic by David after his death), which was done to organize the theft of church values GOC who had a great influence on David bishop Tsilkanskim and Dusheti Gaiem (Keratishvili) together with collaborators from the leadership of the Georgian Communist party and the KGB of the Georgian SSR, including his wife Initia Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Georgia, St. Basil Mzhavanadze . After the resignation of Mzhavanadze in the same 1972, the activities of Keratishvili and his entourage became the subject of investigation by the competent authorities [2] . Zviad Gamsakhurdia , Valentina Paylodze and other dissidents took part in the distribution of these documents [3] .
In anticipation of David V, the Georgian Orthodox Church had, as before, 15 dioceses, and only Mtskhetsko-Tbilisi (Catholicos-Patriarch David V), Tsilkanskaya (metropolitan Gai (Keratishvili) ), Kutaisi-Haenatskaya (metropolitan Roman (Petriashvili) ) were replaced. Sukhum-Abkhazian (Metropolitan Elias (Shiolashvili) . He died on November 9, 1977 in his residence in Tbilisi after a long illness [5] . Buried in the Tbilisi Cathedral of Sioni.
