Xia was a Hunnic state, since it was founded by one of the leaders of the Huns, Shih Tzu ( Helian Bobo ). He was the son of a Hunnic leader, Liu Weicheng, who was killed by the Tobacco . Helyan Bobo lived in his youth at the court of Yao Sin , the ruler of Late Qin , but, collecting 20,000 Huns, he moved to the west bank of the Yellow River and created the Xia kingdom (perhaps as a reminder of the Xia dynasty: the Huns shanyui were considered descendants of the last Wang Xia). Helyan Bobo believed that the urban way of life is fatal to the Huns, but nevertheless chose the city of Tongwan as the capital.
Helyan Bobo annexed 10,000 Syanbians who wandered around Ordos. The campaign to South Liang ended successfully, despite the fact that 20,000 Huns fought with 70,000 Syanbi. Yao Sin's attempt to end Xia did not succeed. By 411, Helian Bobo had achieved considerable success in the war with Qin.
Around 417, Helian Bobo conquered Guanzhong and Chang'an , from where the troops of the South China Empire of East Jin had left.
Xia's kingdom lasted only 24 years. In 431, Xia troops were able to capture the lands of the state of Western Qin , but in the same year, Xia itself was destroyed by the Muyun state of Togon . The remnants of Xia's possessions passed to the Northern Wei Empire.
