The call sign ( identification call sign , PSO) in radio communications is an identifier that identifies a radio station . Usually it is a set of letters, numbers, a meaningful word or a musical phrase transmitted at the beginning of a communication session, necessary for the recognition of the radio station by the receiving party. A PSO is assigned to a radio station by the communications administration of that state (in the Russian Federation - Russia, by the Radio Frequency Service , represented by the Radio Frequency Centers of the Federal Districts and the Main Radio Frequency Center ).
To simplify, use the word call sign .
Call signs are nicknames (nicknames [1] ) for radio stations, and for radio amateurs - specific participants in radio communications [2] . During the armed conflict in eastern Ukraine, fighters on both sides, introducing themselves as reporters, often use the radio call sign [3] [4] instead of their personal name , because of which there was a confusion of the concepts “ nickname ” (nickname) and “call sign” [3] [ 4] .

Radio Broadcasting Service
Radio stations related to the broadcasting radio communication service use the names of the media as the PSO, indicating, if necessary, the nominal radio frequencies .
Amateur Radio Service
In amateur radio communications, PSO is the most informative. PSO is a combination of letters of the Latin alphabet and numbers, as a rule, with a total length of three to six characters. The first part of the USAR Team (prefix) uniquely indicates the country (territory of the world) in accordance with the table of distribution of prefixes . This allows you to determine in which country, and sometimes in what part of it, the radio station is located. The rest of the PSO (suffix) ensures the uniqueness of the PSO, but may also carry additional information (location within the country, category of amateur radio station). The PSO of an amateur radio station is always unique. There are JI databases and reference books containing additional information about the JI owner. The operator of an amateur radio station is obliged to transmit his PSO at the beginning of radio communication and, during long sessions, regularly repeat it. At the same time, the phonetic alphabet is used to increase intelligibility.
