Career

Olympics
The first performance at the Olympics was participation in Atlanta , which immediately brought Michal a gold medal. The current Olympic champion was Czech Lukas Pollert . In the first round, Martikan took the sixth place, however, due to the strongest second race, he became an Olympic champion, beating Pollert by 0.14 points [3] .
In September 2000, at the Sydney Olympics, Martikan won the qualification [4] , however, in the final round, he lost to Frenchman Tony Estange, who won his first gold Olympic medal [5] .
Four years later, at the Athens Olympics, Martikane won the preliminary rounds again [6] [7] , but lost again to the Frenchman in the final. At the same time, according to the results of the first round (which was the semi-final), he was the first, but in the second he became only the fourth. In total, he lost only 0.12 seconds to Estange. It is worth noting that Michal received a two-second penalty in the last race [8] 20 minutes after the end of the final, being the initial winner [1] .
In Beijing in August 2008, Michal won the qualification again [9] and the semi-final [10] . In the final round, he beat Briton David Florence for more than a second, becoming a two-time Olympic champion [1] . His main rival at the last Olympics did not reach the final, becoming the ninth [11] .
At the fifth for the Olympic Games in London in August 2012, Michal did not remain without medals, thus winning prizes at all five Olympiads, which he took part in. He again turned out to be the best in qualifying [12] , having directly reached the final, but there he could not win again, losing to both longtime rival Estange and German Sideris Taciadis [13] .
Martikan became the most titled athlete in the history of rowing slalom in terms of the number of medals (although Estange won three gold), and he is also a nine-time world champion, four times in the individual championship and five in the team championship [13] .
