The music of Tenacious D demonstrates Black's vivid stage vocal pitch and Gass's musical abilities. [2] Critics have called it a vulgar absurdist mix of comedy and rock, "mock-rock" (full of mocking, parody rock). [1] [3] Their lyrics show off their musical and sexual prowess, as well as strong friendships and smoking cannabis. Critics compare this performance with musical stories characteristic of rock operas. [4] [5]

History

Black and Gass first met in 1989 at the Edinburgh Art Festival . [6] Then they were 20 and 29 years old respectively. Both were members of The Actors' Gang from Los Angeles , which featured the play “The Massacre” by Tim Robbins and Adam Simon. [6] [7] [8] [9] At first, there was hostility between them, since Gass saw in Black’s face (who was the main actor of the troupe) his rival. In the end, they figured out their differences and decided to create their own group. [2] [10] [11] Gass agreed to teach Black to play the guitar, and Black, in turn, began to help Gass with acting skills. [eleven]

At the beginning of their careers, musicians performed cover versions of Bobby McFerrin's songs at live performances. [12] Until 1994, the group had no name, and at one of the concerts, they gave the public the opportunity to choose the name they liked. [6] [11] The list included such names as “Pets or Meat” (Pets or Meat), “Balboa's Biblical Theater” (Balboa Biblical Theater) and “The Ax Lords Featuring Gorgazon's Mischief” (Ax Lords and Gorgazonsky pyshnik). [11] “Tenacious D” (Robust Dee) - an expression used by sports commentator Marv Albert to describe a powerful positional defense game when playing basketball - and, although this name did not get the majority of votes, “we pushed it” - Black admitted . [11] Among the viewers was David Cross, who later invited Tenacious D to take part in the comedy sketch show Mr. Show. [1] [13]

In 2001, they released their debut album “Tenacious D” . Their first single, Tribute, was the band’s biggest achievement, raising them to the first 10 lines for the first and last time on many charts. In 2006, they starred and recorded the soundtrack for the film Tenacious D: Mediator of Fate . In support of the film, the group went on a world tour.

In early 2015, Black confirmed that after the Tenacious D “Unplugged and Unprotected” European tour, the band will be working on their fourth album, although the release date was not announced. Prior to this confirmation, Gass and Black teased the 2015 release date last year in an interview. In addition, it was announced that the band will perform at the Boston Calling Music Festival in May, Amnesia Rockfest in June and the Riot Fest in Chicago in September.

In December 2015, Black and Gass auctioned off props and costumes in support of the Sweet Stuff Foundation in response to the attacks of Paris in November 2015, when the Eagles of Death Metal concert was attacked. Tenacious D'2014 Festival Supreme recognized Eagles of Death Metal as an act on the main stage. The details for the auction featured costumes that were worn on MTV's “Full Live Request” in 2003, the JR Reed tour “The Metal from the Pick of Destiny”, the costumes from the Low Hangin 'Fruit music video and more.

In 2015, Tenacious D won the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance [14] .

At the beginning of the summer of 2016, a European tour will cover areas from Germany, Denmark and Sweden.

In addition to performing in their European tour, the band confirmed participation in two international festivals. The first is The Rosklide Festival in Denmark, which is held on June 30, 2016. In addition to this festival, the artists announced that they were playing at the Bravalla festival in Norrköping, Sweden, only a few days after that, on July 1, 2016.

On February 5, 2016, Black was a guest at BBC Radio 2 Chris Evans breakfast. Asked about the status of the group, Black confirmed that they are working on a new album. Stating that they were “very slow,” Black suggested that he was likely to be completed in 2018. Black also noted that so far they had only a few song titles.
