History
1982-1987
The group was founded in 1982 by young musicians Frege, von Holst, Moirer, Breitkopf and Trimpop. At their first concert, the group was presented as “Die Toten Hasen” (“Dead Hares”) due to a typo [4] . In the same year, Die Toten Hosen released their first single, Wir sind bereit , followed by Reisefieber . The third recorded single was a drinking song - Eisgekühlter Bommerlunder . She often sounded on radio stations and increased the number of fans of the group.
In 1983, guitarist Walter November enters the Jehovah's Witnesses sect and leaves the group [5] .
In the summer of 1983, the band released their first album, Opel-Gang, on their own label Totenkopf (skull) [6] .
In 1984, the BBC invites the band to perform at the John Peel Show. The high cost of the trip becomes the beginning of conflicts with EMI , the group leaves the label and signs a contract with Virgin Records .
Die Toten Hosen’s second album, Unter falscher Flagge , was released in 1984 . The cover shows the band members in pirate clothes. In the original, on the back cover was the skeleton of a dog sitting in front of a gramophone, but due to a legal conflict with the EMI, it was replaced with an eagle skeleton.
In the spring of 1985, the group toured in France for the Goethe Institute [7] , and in the fall they toured in Hungary and Poland.
In 1986, the third studio album, Damenwahl , was recorded , and at the end of 1987, the group’s first live album, Bis zum bitteren Ende, was released . He took 23 position in the German charts and 17 - in the Austrian [8] . The album sold over 500 thousand copies and received platinum status in Germany [9] .
1988-1995
In 1988, after the release of the album Ein kleines bisschen Horrorschau , containing the song “Hier kommt Alex” (“ German and Alex ”), the group achieved great popularity. The song is the soundtrack to the play “ Clockwork Orange ” by Bernd Schadewald, based on the eponymous book by Anthony Burgess and the film Kubrick . Hier kommt Alex constantly played on popular radio stations and very soon reached 16 positions in the Top 2000 D [10] .
The band's spring tour in 1989 included a performance at the Westfalenhallen Arena in Dortmund . In the summer of 1990, Die Toten Hosen went to Italy in connection with the World Cup [11] . A cover version of Azzurro's song Adriano Celentano was recorded, which was accompanied by a video ridiculing the behavior of German football fans abroad. The double album of the group 125 Jahre die Toten Hosen: Auf dem Kreuzzug ins Glück , which includes this song, was released in 1990 and already in the first week sold 150 thousand copies [12] .
Political and social activities
The group actively advocates for the anti-fascist movement, often calling on their concerts to fight against racism and nationalism . Members of the group support Greenpeace and anti-globalization campaigns, oppose nuclear power plants and the use of fur for clothing. Many songs condemn the negative attitude towards foreigners, the lack of political and environmental understanding.
Die Toten Hosen are patriots of their hometown. In the late 1980s, the group donated 200.000 DM to Fortuna Düsseldorf football club for the purchase of Anthony Baffoe. Also, the group signed a contract with the local brewery " Diebels " and supports with the proceeds the youth team of "Fortune", which now wears the logo of the group on T-shirts. The members of the group want to be buried in Düsseldorf and, therefore, have already booked graves in the southern cemetery of the city.
