Biography
He studied at the University of Vienna, then taught there from 1913 to 1920 . In 1920, he became head of the Department of Celtic Philology at the University of Berlin , where he worked until 1935 , when he was fired by the Nazis because of Jewish descent, despite the Catholic religion and nationalistic beliefs. In May 1936 he received the “Certificate of No Claims” (Unbedenklichkeitsbescheinigung) from the local NSDAP group, on the basis of which he was able to receive state pension. He received an early warning about the pogrom of 1938, known as Kristallnacht , thanks to which he had left for Belgium in advance. [2]
He actively supported the independence of Ireland and was the author of a number of publications on the current situation in Ireland. Prior to World War II, he was editor of the journal Zeitschrift für celtische Philologie and contributed to its resumption after the war.
In 1943 he emigrated to Switzerland, where he worked at the universities of Bern and Zurich until his retirement in 1959 . In 1954, he was elected professor emeritus of the Ludwig-Maximilian University in Munich, where he taught in 1956 and 1960-1965. He is best known as the author of the Indo-European Etymological Dictionary published in 1959 (Indogermanisches etymologisches Wörterbuch, generally accepted abbreviation - IEW ), which became a revised version of Alois Walde's dictionary published by Pokorny in 1927-1930. He died in Zurich three weeks after the accident (hit by a tram).
