Albert Edelfelt was born on July 21, 1854 in the vicinity of Borgo (Porvoo). His father, Karl Edelfelt, was an architect.

From 1869 to 1871 he studied at the School of Drawing of the Union of Finnish Artists in Helsingfors with Berndt Lindholm and Bernhard Reinhold. From 1871 to 1873 he studied at the University of Helsingfors , and from 1872 to 1873 - at the Academy of Arts of Antwerp [6] . In 1874 he took lessons from J. L. Jerome in Paris [6] .

Repeatedly traveled to Italy and France , was in England (1878), Spain (1881), Sweden , Denmark and Russia .

This artist can be safely ranked not only among the major painters of Finland, but also in Europe. ‹...› His first picture, exhibited first in France and then in St. Petersburg - “Queen Blanca” , immediately attracted the attention of the public. The following picture, “Duke Karl over the corpse of Klas Fleming” (1878) strengthened his fame. ‹...› Edelfeld has created a number of excellent Finnish genres, an example of “A Pit of Finnish Skerries” [7] . The types of Finnish people are grasped by the artist with charming epic simplicity. ‹...› From the beginning of the 1890s, Edelfeld set about portraying evangelical plots in a Finnish national setting: he gives Mary Magdalene the character of a simple peasant girl from Karelia, and Christ who stands before her is a type of Finnish shepherd, in simple bast shoes. The entire scene of Magdalen's repentance is surrounded by a silver-blue haze of the coast of Lake Saimaa with a thin birch forest along the outskirts of mossy shores. As the pandanus of this picture can be called "Christmas" , where the Mother of God is placed in a wretched Finnish shack and dressed in a national costume. Edelfeld is an excellent portrait painter. Particularly good is the portrait of Pasteur , depicting him working in his laboratory. [eight]

In 1877, the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts recognized him as his honorary associate, and in 1886 gave him the title of academician [9] for the painting “The Funeral of a Child” . Full member of the Imperial Academy of Arts (1895) [1] .

Exhibited since 1872. Belonged to the realistic direction, was influenced by impressionism [6] . He painted historical and everyday paintings, scenes from Finnish folk life, portraits and landscapes [9] . Among his works are monumental historical canvases ( “The Swedish king Karl insults the corpse of his enemy staffhalter Fleming in 1537” , 1878, “March of the Bjerneborg regiment” , 1892), paintings on everyday themes ( “Women from Ruokolahti” , 1887; “Laundresses” , 1893), portraits ( L. Pasteur , 1885) and landscapes ( Pines , 1898) [6] .

He died on August 18, 1905 in Borgo.
