Biography
Atanas Uzunov participated in the national-liberation Stara Zagoras uprising , as part of the Chervenovodskaya couple ( 1875 ), after the defeat of the uprising he emigrated to Romania . In 1876 , as a volunteer, he took part in the Serbian-Turkish war, participated in the battles of Zajčar and Korito. Then he entered the service of the 60th Zamostsky Infantry Regiment of the Russian Army, in 1877 entered the Odessa Junker Infantry School. In the same year, with the beginning of the Russian-Turkish war of 1877-1878. enrolled as a militia in the 3rd company of the 2nd squad (battalion) of the Bulgarian militia, participated in the battles at Stara Zagora , at Shipka , at Sheinovo, in the Kotelsky Balkan. He was awarded the insignia of the Military Order (of St. George) of the 4th degree and in 1878 promoted to warrant officer.
After the liberation of Bulgaria, he served in the 2nd infantry squad of Kyustendil (from 1879 ), then in the 22nd infantry squad of the Pazardzhik squad and the 1st sapper Sofia company. In 1885 , the first of the Bulgarian officers, Uzunov, graduated from the Nikolaev Academy of Engineering in St. Petersburg . He is the author of the manuscript "Crawling from Military Engineers".
During the Serbian-Bulgarian war of 1885, Captain Uzunov was the head of the small Northern detachment and commandant of the Vidin fortress on the Danube , showed himself as an erudite military engineer in strengthening and defending the fortress. During the siege of Vidin, Serbian troops successfully defended the fortress from superior enemy forces. When the Serbian General Miloiko Leshanin (another hero of the Serbo-Turkish war) offered him to surrender the fortress, Uzunov answered him that he was taught to take fortresses rather than surrender them, and continued to defend. Under his leadership, the storming of the fortress was repulsed on November 14-17, 1885, after which the Serbian troops were forced to retreat. For the defense of Vidin, Uzunov was awarded the title of honorary citizen of this city.
In 1885— 1886 Uzunov commanded a pioneer (engineering) squad in Ruse. In 1886 he was awarded the title of honorary citizen of the city of Vidin . In 1887 - the commander of the 3rd infantry brigade and the commandant Ruse. Adhered to the pro-Russian political views, in February 1887 led the uprising of officers Russophiles in Ruse - so called. “Rusensky riot” against the chairman of the National Assembly (later - regent and minister-president) Stefan Stambolov , who ruled the principality with the help of crude authoritarian methods. Major Olympians Panov and leader of the national militia Tom Kardzhiev became the closest associates of Uzunov. Memory
In 1934, the village of Halvadzhii was renamed Major-Uzunovo . In his honor, many streets in Bulgarian cities and the Sports School in Ruse are named.
