The Karakoram Highway ( Urdu شاہراہ قراقرم , śāharāha qarāqaram ) or the Karakoram Highway [1] is a 1300-kilometer high-mountain road that crosses the Kara-Korum via the Khunjerab Pass at an altitude of 4693 m. It is the highest international highway in the world. It was built from 1966 to 1986. along the ancient route of the Great Silk Road . The cost of building a highway, 806 km of which lies within the borders of Pakistan , and the remaining 494 km in XUAR ( China ) amounted to about three billion dollars. [2] During construction, 810 Pakistani and 82 Chinese workers died from avalanches and falls. [3] In winter, due to the danger of avalanches, traffic along the Karakorum highway is closed.
