ARTS History

The cultural center "ARTStrelka" was opened on September 18, 2004 at the initiative of Vladimir Dubosarsky in the territory of the factory "Red October" [2] , owned by "Guta-groups" [3] . ARTStrelka became one of the first Moscow experiences of gentrification [4] . Initially, it was planned to give this territory to the artists for two years, after which the land owner " Guta-Development " planned the construction of the "Zolotoy Ostrov" housing complex on this site. In fact, the cultural center existed for almost five years, until June 27, 2009, after which an institute and a bar with the same name Strelka arose in its place.

"ARTStrelka" was an area overlooking seven exits from garages rented by seven exhibition venues (usually galleries). The garage building had a two-story annex, which closed the ARTStrelka from the waterfront and made the space more private. This building also housed several independent exhibition venues.

All galleries tried to hold exhibitions once a month on the same day - the last or penultimate Saturday. Often during the general opening day, performances took place on the square. On other ordinary days of ARTStrelka’s work, most galleries were locked.

Inside “ARTStrelka”, in 2006, the Companion -in-Shop Prize in the field of contemporary art was born.

Quotes

  • “ARTStrelka partly owes its appearance to the urban development quirk, namely the pedestrian bridge from the Cathedral of Christ the Savior . When the bridge was already half completed, it turned out that there was really nowhere to go along it: the dapper structure rested on the factory garages and storehouses unsuitable for planning. The happy idea to create an exhibition center on the territory of “Red October” belongs to the artist Vladimir Dubosarsky , who has already shown his talent as an art manager by organizing the ArtKlyazma open-air art festival. The very idea of organizing art spaces in former industrial buildings has long been known in the West. As for the regulars of the Moscow galleries of contemporary art, their ARTStrelka evokes pleasant memories of the first Center for Contemporary Art , which was located nearby, on Yakimanskaya Embankment , from 1992 to 1995 . Since then, many people have associated contemporary art with the aroma of chocolate coming from the factory “Red October” ” [1] - I. Kulik .
  • “And so“ ARTStrelka ”closes. The news was distributed by Olga Lopukhova , co-owner and curator of the most active gallery “ ARTStrelka Projects ”. She told Kommersant that ARTStrelka is repeating the global scenario of gentrification , when artists abandoned first in abandoned areas, and businessmen are already taking their place. “All these years we paid $ 150 per square meter per year, now rents, of course, will increase. “I heard that they are going to open a restaurant on the site of our gallery,” she shared with “Kommersant.” “But I asked the new owner, Alexander Mamut, not to use our name“ ARTStrelka ”. He promised to think about it ” [5] - Kommersant. - 2009. - May 26.
