Biography

Born in Los Angeles in a family of Peruvian descent. His father was a consul of Peru, and his mother was an American native of South Carolina. Manny started racing with amateur racing in the 1940s. Together with his friend and teammate Jack McGrath, he laid the foundation for the use of road roadsters in racing. According to some reports, did not use the services of mechanics, modifying the car on their own. In 1948, he first participated in the AAA Championship. The best result for him was second place in 1954 with two victories - in Darlington and in the second race in Milwaukee. He also started three times from the pole, and all participated in 59 races.

From 1949 to 1955, he participated annually in the “Indianapolis 500 Miles”. Of the seven attempts to qualify, they succeeded four times, in 1953 - even in the second row, in fourth place. However, from four starts, he was able to reach the finish line only twice, in 20th place in 1952 and in 13th place in 1954. But the 1951 race was the best result for him. Despite the fact that he did not qualify behind the wheel of his car, by agreement with old friend McGrath, he replaced the one behind the wheel exactly after the middle of the distance - on the hundredth circle. Starting from the first row, McGrath even managed to get a dozen laps by that time, so Ayyulo was able to finish in the third highest place for himself without any problems. Since from 1950 to 1960, the race in Indianapolis was considered the test stage of the Formula 1 World Cup, both drivers, according to the then rules, received two points in the classification.

Manny's career ended in 1955 when he died participating in training before the next race in Indianapolis. The accident occurred late in the evening, passing the first turn, he lost control and crashed into the wall almost “on the forehead”. According to the official version, the cause of the death of the rider could be a faulty fastening of the steering wheel, an unfastened seat belt or an error due to twilight.
