History and Etymology

The statue of Mars (York, beginning of the 4th century), named after March.

The month received its name in honor of the Roman god of war and the protection of Mars . In ancient Rome, where the climate was relatively mild, March was the first spring month, a logical point for the start of the agricultural year, and was considered a favorable time for the start of a seasonal military campaign.

The name "March" came to the Russian language from Byzantium . In ancient Russia, until 1492, March was considered the first month; when the year began to be counted from September, until 1699 it was the seventh; and from the 1700th to the third. The Russian span began in March (“spring,” a word that has now come out of book use). In some Russian dialects, the first day of March is called a beginner . In the past, on March 1, Russian peasants ran out of winter hiring terms and spring hiring began.

Great Britain and its colonies used the starting point of the year of March 25 until 1752, when the Gregorian calendar was adopted in the country.

The historical European names for March include the Saxon names Lentmonat (named after the equinox and lengthening the day), also Rhed-Monat or Hreth-monath (in honor of the Saxon goddess Rhedam or Hreth , who were sacrificed this month) [4] . The Angles called March Hyld-monath ("month of storms"). In the old Russian calendar (before the adoption of Christianity), the month was called dry , in the folk months also - winter horticulture, protestor, rookery, dropper .

In most European languages, the name March corresponds to the Latin tradition. However, there are a few exceptions.

In Finnish, the month is called maaliskuu from maallinen kuu - “the month of the earth” - at this time the earth is shown from under the snow. In Czech, March is called březen , in Ukrainian - birch , from the word “birch”, from which sap flow begins. The Belarusian name sakavik is close in meaning, from the word “juice” (meaning birch). In Croatian, March - ožujak , it is assumed that the name comes from the Croatian word meaning “false”, which indicates the duality, the variability of the weather during this period. In Lithuanian it is called kovas , literally - “rook” [5] .

In Kazakh, the month of March is Nauryz, respectively associated with the Novruz holiday , which is celebrated the same month.

In modern Chinese and Japanese , March is referred to as the "third month."
