CD36 is a membrane protein expressed on the surface of several types of cells, especially macrophages ; belongs to class B scavenger receptors , a component of the innate immunity system . It binds red blood cells infected with the parasitic Plasmodium falciparum , oxidized low-density lipoproteins , phospholipids and fatty acids . In addition, CD36 expressed on the surface of the epithelium of the taste buds of the tongue is a receptor that binds food fatty acids and participates in the formation of a “taste of fat”.
