Description
The only species of the genus is Philesia magellanica , an evergreen shrub up to 1 m high and up to 2 m in diameter, often climbing, growing in the mountains, in forest swamps in southern Chile.
The leaves are small, lanceolate, 12 to 35 mm long, white or bluish-white underneath, very similar to the leaves of another marsh plant - the white leaf ( Andromeda polifolia ) from the Heather family growing in the Northern Hemisphere .
The flowers are bell-shaped or tubular, raspberry-pink color, up to 6 cm long. Flowering time - the end of summer.
The fruit is a berry .
Synonym : Philesia buxifolia Willd. - The filsia is boxwood.
Philosophy in Culture
In 1847, phylosia was brought to England and has since been grown as an ornamental plant .
Most of all, a cool climate is suitable for the plant, but without negative temperatures: the plant can tolerate frosts up to minus 10 degrees, but they cause harm to the plant. Filhesia is best placed in a light shadow. The soil should be rich in humus , well- drained . Reproduction - by cuttings or layering.
Famous intergeneric hybrid of phylosy and lapazheria × Philageria veitchii Mast. - Vila Filazheria - received in England in 1872 in Vitch’s horticulture. This is an evergreen shrub with curly branches and pink flowers [2] .
