Route

It starts in Alma-Ata , goes west along the Trans-Ili Alatau ridge, crosses the Chu-Ili Mountains through the Kordai Pass , the Shu River. Then it crosses northern Kyrgyzstan through Bishkek and again goes through Kazakhstan ( Merke , Taraz , Shymkent ). In the late 1990s, Kazakhstan laid a bypass road through its territory bypassing Kyrgyzstan from the north (from Merke to Shu – Kordai road) and now most of the cars go to Almaty along the Merke – Kordai highway, circling Bishkek and saving time and money on two customs procedures (at the entrance and exit from Kyrgyzstan).
