Guangzhou Metro ( Chinese 广州 地铁 Guǎngzhōu dìtiě ) is a transportation system in the city of Guangzhou , China . Opened in 1997 , becoming the fourth subway in China, after Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin. As of the beginning of 2019, it consists of 14 lines, 259 stations, the total length of the lines is 476.3 km. Managed by Guangzhou Metro Corporation.

At the beginning of 2019, it was the 5th metro in the world in terms of line lengths and the 5th in the world in terms of congestion in the metro system , second only to Tokyo, Seoul, Beijing and Shanghai.
Most of the metro system serves the urban area, while lines 2, 3, 4, 9, 13, and 14 also connect the suitable areas of Huadu, Baiyun, Panyu, and Nansha to the city center.
The Guangfo line is the only one in the country that connects two cities (Foshan and Guangzhou).
Until 2020, a significant development of the Guangzhou subway system is planned. The construction of three new lines was approved - line 14, line 21 and line 11. Work is also underway to extend lines 5, 8 and Guangfo, which are planned to be completed between 2018 and 2020.

History
The decision to build the subway in Guangzhou was made in 1989. Construction began in 1993. The first line was launched on June 28, 1997 . In 2002, the second line was opened, in 2005 - the third and fourth. On December 28, 2013, the 6th metro line was opened.
Lines and Stations
Lines are indicated by numbers and colors.
- Line 1 (yellow): Silan - Guangzhou East Station
- Line 2 (blue): Jiahe Wangan - Guangzhou South Station
- Line 3 (orange): “South Airport Terminal” - “Tiyu Silu”, “Tianhe Bus Station” - “Tiyu Si Lu” - “Panyu Square”. The longest metro line in the world.
- Line 4 (green): Jinzhou - Huangcun
- Line 5 (red): Jiaokou - Wenchong
- Line 6 (purple) Xunfengang - Changban
- Line 8 (greenish blue): Wanshenwei - Fenghuang Xincun
- APM Line (Blue) Guangzhou Tower - Linhe Xi
- Guangfo Line 1 (light green) "Kuitsi Lu" (Foshan) - "Silan"
On line 3 in the northern part there is a fork movement, a fork from Tiyu Silu station. Line 8 on the Changan - Wanshenwei section used to be a section of line 2, and line 4 is its continuation to the southeast.
Transfer stations: Jiahe Wangan (between lines 2 and 3), Guangzhou Railway Station (between lines 2 and 5), Gongyuyanqian (between lines 1 and 2), Guangzhou East Station (between lines 1 and 3) , “Tiyu Silu” (between lines 1 and 3), “Ketsun” (between lines 8 and 3), “Wanshenwei” (between lines 8 and 4), “Yangji” (between lines 1 and 5), “Changan” ( between 2 and 8 lines), “Chebey nan” (between lines 4 and 5), “Pearl River Xincheng” (between lines 3 and 5). With the opening of the 6th metro line, the interchange stations were Tianhe Bus Station, Yantang (on both, go to line 3), Ouzhuang (on line 5), "Haizhu Square" (go to line 2), "Huangsha ”(Transition to line 1) and“ Danwei ”(transition to line 5).
Transfer to the main railway station of Guangzhou - at the station of lines 2 and 5 "Guangzhou Station".
Lines 2 and 3 are completely underground, line 1 has 2 above-ground stations and one above-ground in the southwest, line 4 is mostly above-ground, line 6 goes to the surface after Tanvey station. All stations have platform sliding doors .
Rolling stock
In 2008, 802 cars were operating: on lines 1 and 2 - Movia 456 (joint production of Bombardier and Changhong ), on line 3 - joint production of Zhuzhou and Siemens AG , on line 4 - production of Kawasaki and Sifang .
Perspectives
Two lines are under construction: 7 and 9 (for both - not earlier than 2015). Work is also underway to extend the 8th line to the north (to the Kultury Park station) and the Guangfo (Guangzhou-Foshan) line on the Silan section (transfer to Guangzhou Metro line 1) to Lijiao (change to Line 3 Guangzhou subway) The metro development plan was approved, according to which line 4 will be extended south from Jinzhou Station to Nansha Ferry Terminal Station and line 8 north from Park Kultury Station (intersection with line 6) to Lake Station Baiyun "and the construction of 5 new lines -
11 - Ring. Pazhou - East Station - Pazhou. The line surrounds the city center and will intersect with all lines, with the exception of 4 and 7.
13 - Eastern. "Yuzhu" (transition to line 5) - "Xiangjing". The line will serve to develop the eastern regions and integrate the space between Guangzhou and Dongguan into the urban zone. In the future, it is planned to extend the line through the entire city to the west, parallel to the existing lines 5 and 1, and further to the north, parallel to the future section of line 8 "Culture Park" - "Baiyun Lake"
14 - North. "Jiahe Wangan" - "Jiekou." The line will serve to integrate the northern suburbs of Guangzhou into urban space, and will subsequently be extended to the Guangzhou Railway Station station, and will pass under the existing highway to the airport. 21 - Northeast. "Yuancun" (transition to line 5) - "Zhenchen Square". The line will connect the center with the new Zhenchen district in the northeast.
KS (14KS) - "Xinhe" (transition to line 14) - "Zhenlong" (transition to line 21). The line will be a fork extension of line 14 to the east, passing through the northern regions and the Academgorodok (Knowledge City), in whose honor it will be named
Currently, design work is underway for lines 12, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20. The section of the existing line 3 “Tianhe Bus Station” - “Tiyu Silu” will be a section of line 10, which will run from the north-east of the city to the south -west.

Fare
The fare in the subway depends on the distance, non-contact reusable cards (used also for other city payments) or tokens with a programmable contactless chip for one trip (presented at the entrance and collected at the exit) are used for payment. The full fare is from 2 to 12 yuan , there are discounts for children, students and seniors from 60 to 64 years old, for people from 65 years old and disabled people travel is free. After the 15th trip of each month (if payment is by transport card), a 40 percent discount on subsequent trips in Guangzhou public transport.
