The main topic of his research was Russian-French relations in the XVIII-XIX centuries. The monograph "Double-headed eagle and Royal Lilies: The Formation of Russian-French Relations in the 18th Century " was awarded the prize of E.V. Tarle ( Russian Academy of Sciences , 1997 ). In the Bulletin of the Russian Academy of Sciences (vol. 68, No. 3, 1998 ), this book was characterized as follows:
The monograph is distinguished by its beautiful language, the imagery of political portraits of figures of the era; indisputable literary advantages make it interesting for the reader (all this makes her similar in style, spirit and content to the works of E.V. Tarle). On the whole, P.P. Cherkasov’s book is a fundamental study not only of the history of the development of Russian-French relations, but of the whole system of European diplomacy of the 18th century.
In 2001, the continuation of this study was published - the monograph Catherine II and Louis XVI . Russian-French Relations: 1774-1792 ”. The book was reprinted in 2004. In line with previous studies in 2010, he published the monograph Elizaveta Petrovna and Louis XV. Russian-French relations 1741-1762. " This book received the A. Leroy-Beaulieu Prize, awarded annually by the French Embassy in Russia for the best research by Russian authors on French issues (2011).
Another area of interest for a scientist is a historical biography. He is the author of the first biographical books in Russian historical science about General Lafayette and Cardinal Richelieu . In 2008 , his study “Russian Agent in France” was published, dedicated to the fate of the writer and intelligence officer Yakov Nikolayevich Tolstoy.
In 2004, he published a capital study “IMEMO. Portrait on the Background of the Epoch ”, dedicated to the history of IMEMO, which analyzed the experience of the institute in various periods of Soviet history, showing its place and role in the Soviet political system. In this monograph on the example of the activities of the academic institute, the problem of the complex relationship of scientific intelligentsia and power in the USSR is investigated.
Some works of P.P. Cherkasov were published in France, Germany, the USA, Norway and Lithuania.
