Biography

The son of Mahomet Kodzokov, who served in the Life Guards of the Caucasian-Gorsky semi-squadron. Since the late 1820s. - in Moscow , brought up in the family of Alexey Khomyakov . He was given to the private boarding house of Professor Pavlov , who graduated in 1834 [3] [4] . In 1838 he graduated from the 1st (historical and philological) department of the Faculty of Philosophy of Moscow University (the first Kabardian who graduated from Moscow University), where his work "Description of the Caucasus" took one of the first places in the essay competition for students [5] .

At the end of July 1839, Kodzokov returned to the North Caucasus, to his homeland. Here, Kodzokov began to carry out plans for organizing exemplary farms, where the mountaineers could see and adopt progressive forms of farming, master new crafts, European house-building skills and household comfort, which he wrote to his adoptive parents, Khomyakov, in letters. From the very beginning of his arrival to the Caucasus, Kodzokov showed interest in horse breeding. As early as 1840, in his letter addressed to Khomyakov, he wrote: “From the horses, cattle, and sheep presented to me from kunaks, I intend to lay the foundation for the residents of the farm. But the lack of people and hands makes it difficult for any prudent measures ” [6] .

In 1840–1841 in Pyatigorsk, he met with M. Yu. Lermontov [7] .

In 1845-1851 he served in the management of the Transcaucasian Customs District; in 1861–1863, he acted as an official of special assignments for the governor of the Caucasus; in 1863-1869 he was chairman of the Terek-Kuban estate-land commission.

Awarded the Order of St. Anna of the 2nd degree (1866); State Councilor since 1867 [8] .

In 1869–88, D. S. Kodzokov was chairman of the commission for the analysis of the estate rights of the mountaineers of the Kuban and Terek regions. But in all posts he did not leave his care for cattle breeding, and especially horse breeding, of the Caucasus: in August 1869, he spoke at the first congress of horse breeders in the Stavropol province in Pyatigorsk. In September 1875, Kodzokov submitted a note on the “Rules on Testing and Encouraging Horse Breeding Proposed by the Directorate of the Caucasian Horse Breeding District” [6] . As an important event in the life of the mountaineers, he considered the opening in 1868 of the Vladikavkaz Vocational School, where there was a training of specialists for agriculture. After the transfer to Kodzokov's “eternal possession” of the school of a large plot of land worth 4 thousand rubles, the trustee of the Caucasian school district expressed deep gratitude to D. S. Kodzokov “for such a valuable donation” [5] .
