It is formed at the confluence of two rivers - Avonmore and Avonbeg - and flows through the county of Wicklow , without going beyond it to the confluence of the Irish Sea . In the river valley there is a large copper mine and a processing plant, closed in 2002 due to severe pollution of the river [4] .
In 2016, Avoca entered the list of six rivers, which, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), became the most polluted rivers in Ireland [5] .
Scientists are conducting research and socio-technical surveys for options for restoring drainage of the river channel and improving environmental conditions [3] [6] .
The river attracts many tourists, as there are enough fish in its waters, but its fishing is limited by strict rules [7] .
