These are plants with cirrus leaves without stipules and bisexual flowers collected in panicles, complex umbrellas or brushes. Most species are evergreens, but there are deciduous plants that drop their foliage in the dry season or winter. The family includes about 50 genera and 550 species, distributed mainly in tropical areas. Representatives of the genus Toona are common in temperate regions: Northern China , South and Southeast Australia . Representatives of the genus Melia can grow even further north.

Usage
Langsat ( Lansium domesticum ) and Santol ( Sandoricum koetjape ) are cultivated in many tropical countries for their edible fruits. Indian Azadirachta ( Azadirachta indica ) has a variety of medical uses and serves as a source of insecticides . Other members of the family provide fatty and essential oils, alkaloids ( carapin , naregamine , etc.), valuable wood, etc.
