Biography
Aldred Lindisfarnsky was a bishop of Lindisfarne , a city in Northumbria , a probst of the community of St. Cuthbert in Chester le Street .
Aldred is mainly known for his glosses in the form of translations into the Old English language to the Lindisfarns Gospel - the famous Four Gospels in Latin. His literal translation of Latin texts into the local Old English language made the gospel more accessible to members of his community. Aldred’s glosses contained not only translation, but also explained complex Latin concepts. Aldred also provided the text of colophonamy , which clarified numerous important details of the history of this Gospel list. Colophon is a term of Greek origin, which means “limit” or “last line”. Scribes added colophons to display information about their work, including the place, date, cost of the manuscript, and the client for whom the copy was made. Aldred’s colophons show that the Gospel list was compiled at the behest of Eadfrith , Bishop of Lindisfarne in 698, the manuscript was supplied with original binding on the orders of Ethelwold , Edfreth’s successor, in 721 , and the ornaments were executed by Billfrith within Lindisfarne. Colophons also state that the gospel was made for God and St. Cuthbert .
