Biography

Valentin Ludwig Fey was born in a suburb of Munich, attended a public school in 1888-1895, then studied as a carpenter and worked in his specialty until 1901. In his amateur performance, his humorous gift was revealed, and in 1902, Valentin Feuy “hung up his profession” - now this nail, which gave rise to the winged expression with the light hand of Karl Valentin, can be seen driven into the wall of one of the halls rich in funny exhibits and bizarre documents of the Museum of Valentine and Karlstadt in Munich ( German: Karl-Valentin-Museum ). Having taken the stage name Karl Valentin, he began to perform in variety shows as a coupletist, accompanying himself on a mandolin .

After unsuccessful tours in different cities, Karl Valentine returned to Munich in 1908. Here, for the first time, success came to him with the monologue of his own composition Aquarium. Valentin was invited to the Volksssängerbühne, where he soon gained recognition, speaking on occasion and on other stages. In 1911, he met Elizabeth Wellano (1892-1960), two years later becoming his regular partner under the stage name of Liesl Karlstadt [4] .

In 1912, Valentin became interested in cinema; his first film was an 8-minute “Wedding of Karl Valentin” - a satire on the institution of marriage [4] . He created a total of about 40 films, mostly short films; often just filmed his stage sketches on film [4] .

After the Nazis came to power in 1933, Valentine did not emigrate from Germany, like many of his friends; He was skeptical of the Nazi regime, but refrained from speaking on political topics [4] .

Over the years of his stage work, Karl Valentin created and brilliantly performed more than 450 one-act plays, miniatures, sketches and couplets. His dramaturgy, which was largely created on the basis of absurd-logical word-making, influenced many contemporaries, including Bertolt Brecht , was designated by Kurt Tucholsky as "the hellish dance of Prudence around both poles of Madness . Having no permanent job, suffering from malnutrition, Valentine died of pneumonia after hypothermia, obtained after he was inadvertently locked up at night in one of the unheated Munich theaters. He was buried in Planegg near Munich.
