In 1830 he graduated from the theological faculty of Lviv University . He served as a Uniate priest in the Galician villages of Leski, Radokhintsy, Meditsa and (since 1849) in the city of Yavorov.
He proposed introducing the Latin alphabet in the Galician-Russian alphabet, the so-called “ abecadlo, ” published in the Lviv newspaper Rozmaitosci (1834, No. 29) the article “ O wprowadzeniu abecadla polskiego do pismiennictwa ruskiego ” (“On the introduction of the Polish alphabet in Russian alphabet”) [2] , and then published in Latin script a collection of songs and wedding ceremonies “ Ruskoje Wesile ” (Przemysl, 1835 ) - a description of wedding customs. This Joseph Lozinsky began the so-called " alphabet war " in Galicia [3] . Having experienced criticism, he reconsidered his position: after 1848 he resolutely advocated the introduction of the Russian alphabet in the Ukrainian language, abandoned the theory of development of Ukrainian literature as part of Polish.
Lozinsky was one of the first in Galicia to raise questions about the use of the folk language in writing, the author of the grammar of the Ukrainian language “ Gramatyka języka ruskiego ” ( Przemysl , 1846 , in Polish) [1] and the manuscript “ Primer ” ( 1838 ). In 1848 - Deputy Chairman of the Przemysl Russian Council, member of the First Council of Russian Scientists (1848) in Lviv. In the 1860s, he completely broke with the Ukrainianophilic movement and defended the etymological spelling.
He is the author of the novels Parashka ( 1852 ), Vespers ( 1866 ), Korchma ( 1877 ), the work of Zhit Сн I. Snegursky ( 1851 ), a number of articles in the 1860 Zorya Galitskaya about folk games, etc.
