About the store

The App Store offers more than 1.5 million [1] applications for iPhone and iPod Touch and about 725 thousand for iPad (as of June 10, 2015 [2] ), the number of downloads has exceeded 100 billion [3] , and the user base is about 575 million person. [4] There are many categories of applications, including games, Facebook , MySpace and Twitter, and many others.

The cost of selling applications ranges from $ 0.99 to $ 9.99, some professional applications cost significantly more. In Russia, payment is accepted from credit cards, and since December 2008 - from debit cards. Most applications are distributed through the App Store for free [5] .

Owners of the iPhone 3G access to the application store was opened immediately at the time of the start of sales of this model. To access the store, owners of a previous generation device require a software update to the second version. Access to the App Store can also be obtained using iTunes starting with version 7.7.

The store is being watched by Apple experts. Each application is equipped with a special electronic certificate. If with the help of the purchased program someone starts to commit illegal actions, they will remove it from the shelves, and the developers will be “severely reprimanded”.

Revenues from application sales are distributed as follows - the authors receive 70%, Apple takes 30% in order to maintain the store [6] . Officially, Apple claims that it does not intend to make money on sales. Developers also have the opportunity to release free applications. It is also interesting that all purchased programs can be registered in iTunes to download all new updates.

On iPod Touch, the App Store service works when connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi . So users can buy and download applications wirelessly from anywhere. Applications are available either for free or have a certain cost, which is recorded on the user's account in the iTunes Store . The App Store will notify the user in a timely manner as updates for his applications appear. The App Store service is available in iTunes for both Mac computers and PCs , where applications are synchronized with iPhone or iPod Touch via USB .

iPad Apps

iPad launched in April 2010 with over 3,500 apps. By December 2010, just eight months after the release of the iPad, more than 50,000 applications were available. As of July 2011, 16 months after the launch of the iPad, there are more than 100,000 applications specifically designed for the iPad.

On June 10, 2015, more than 725 thousand applications were created for the iPad. Due to the great interest of developers, more than half of the applications in the App Store are optimized for iPad. If the installed application is not optimized for the large screen, then it is scaled to the desired size.

Application Costs

In the application store there are both paid applications and free ones. [7]

In October 2012, Apple added the ability to pay for applications in rubles . In the app store, the prices of all apps in dollars end at 99, not 00. (for example, prices are set at $ 0.99, $ 1.99, $ 2.99, $ 3.99 and so on). To make prices appear in rubles, Apple decided to value $ 0.99 as 33 rubles. Therefore, the application, which costs $ 1.99, began to cost 66 rubles.

In December 2014, Apple valued $ 0.99 as 62 rubles (due to the appreciation of the dollar). [eight]

In January 2015, the rate was changed to 59 rubles for $ 0.99. [9] In May of that year, the rate rose to 75 rubles for $ 0.99.

In July 2015, Apple added to the App Store the ability to set applications prices of 15 and 29 rubles. [ten]

Criticism

Specialists of the research company Palo Alto Networks found in September 2015 in the App Store about 40 applications containing malicious code [52] . According to The Verge, applications were infected with a pirated version of the Xcode development environment for iOS ( XcodeGhost ). Shortly after discovery, these applications were removed from the store [53] [54] .

Now iOS and App Store are the most secure OS and application store in the world. Specially written viruses do not exist.

Since March 2015, Apple introduced censorship for published applications, prohibiting any mention in applications or their descriptions of competing mobile platforms (in particular, Windows Mobile and Android), jailbreak, as well as the publication of news about Microsoft and Google or unconfirmed rumors about future Apple products [55] [56] [57] [58] .
