Ababa Bikila wins Olympic marathon in Rome
Ethiopia's Olympic Committee was founded in 1948 .
Ethiopian long distance runners are among the strongest in sports history. The legendary Ababa Bikila became the first Ethiopian to win an Olympic award, defeating barefoot in a marathon in Rome in 1960. Haile Gebreselassie , Kenenis Bekele , Meseret Defar , Tirunesh Dibaba , Derartu Tulu and others confirmed the strength of the Ethiopian Stayer school.
In addition to athletics, Ethiopian athletes took part in boxing, cycling, skiing and swimming competitions.
