For the first time, license plates on cars in Kazakhstan appeared during Soviet times. From that time until 1993, the country used Soviet-style license plates belonging to the Kazakh Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic and the Kazakh SSR .

In 1993, license plates of its own standard were introduced in Kazakhstan.

Since the end of 2012, the issuance of numbers of a new type has begun in Kazakhstan, which significantly differ from the previous one.

The license plates of automobiles of 1993 model in Kazakhstan are a metal plate of rectangular and / or square shape with black symbols on a white background, in the format of one letter, three numbers and two or three letters of the Latin alphabet . By the first letter in front of the numbers, you can track the place of registration (region or city of republican significance). If after the numbers two letters are indicated, the car is registered to a legal entity. If three digits are indicated after the numbers, then the car is registered to an individual. The Republic of Kazakhstan is, together with Uzbekistan, one of the few states in the CIS that at one time refused to put symbols on numbers registered on legal entities and individuals identifying state affiliation. On the 1993 license plate numbers there were no images of the Flag , the Coat of Arms or the letter code of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The exception was the numbers of the KZ, ADM, and AV series of cars servicing the apparatus of the Administration of the President of Kazakhstan , top officials of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan .

Initially, it was supposed to assign to all automobile numbers of individuals the last of the three letters after the digits - M (from the word menhik - in Kazakh, private ), but due to the exhaustion of all possible combinations (primarily for vehicles registered in Almaty ) from three numbers and three letters, entered sequentially as the third letter N and then O. The last letter entered in the fall of 2011 in the city of Alma-Ata is the letter P.
From the Latin alphabet , the letters G , J , Q, and I were not used for indexing until 2018. Since 2018, these letters are allowed ^[1] . Also, zero numbers are not allowed to be indexed.

The numbers and letters of the registration marks must be repeated on the rear wall of the bodies of trucks, trailers (except for trailers for cars and motorcycles) and buses (except for especially small ones).

Numbers of tractors and machinery

The numbers are executed with yellow characters on a blue background, the number formats are:
- a plate with beveled lower corners: in the upper row is the letter of the region and three numbers, in the lower row - three letters;
- a plate with beveled upper corners: the previous number mirrored vertically;
- a square plate: in the upper row are three letters, in the lower row are three numbers and the letter of the region;
- a plate with clipped lower corners: a square number mirrored vertically.

In August 2013, it was announced that these numbers will not change in the near future, as the numbers are introduced relatively recently, and special equipment is not involved in the international movement.

Transit License Plates

Transit license plates are issued to vehicles temporarily approved for traffic. They are performed on a paper basis in the form of a square, fixed under the front and rear windows. The format of the number is as follows: from the top, in the heading there is the inscription “TRANZIT”, below it are four digits, below the digits are two letters (the first letter is the region code) and the car code is “KZ” in the oval.

These numbers are issued in Kazakhstan to this day, however, there are frequent cases of deviation from the given appearance. So, there were transit numbers made in a different font, on paper of a different size and even color, in some MREO they issued 5-digit numbers, and, starting somewhere in 2014, numbers with a numerical designation of the region instead of two letters began to be found. Rarely, even single-row transit numbers were found, the size of a standard plate.

License plates of non-residents of Kazakhstan

Signs of this type are installed on vehicles owned by foreign citizens and enterprises (including banks and trade missions operating in Kazakhstan), as well as joint ventures. The appearance and format of the 1993 model is completely inherited from Soviet license plates for foreign citizens and enterprises; they contain a letter and six numbers in black on a yellow background. The letter means non-resident status, and the first three digits are the country code (as in diplomatic numbers) or the code of the region where the vehicle is registered. The letter means:
K - foreign media (bureaus and bureaux), as well as their employees (journalists and correspondents). The first three digits indicate the country code (as on diplomatic license plates).
M - foreign enterprises (including trade representations and representative offices of banks). The first three digits indicate the country code (as on diplomatic license plates).
N - joint ventures and foreign citizens. The first three digits indicate the area code. Initially, old Soviet codes were used in the range from 603 to 622; later codes were entered starting at 7 , even later at 8 .
P - license plates for export or travel outside Kazakhstan. The first three digits indicate the area code.

Trailed and motorcycle license plates of non-residents of Kazakhstan differ from ordinary trailed and motorcycle license plates in yellow. The format is also 4 digits and two latin letters. The first letter means the region code, the second letter X. There is also a license plate for non-resident special equipment, it also has a yellow background, the shape of the plate is square, the top row contains three numbers, and the bottom row contains three letters.

Дипломатические номерные знаки

Внешний вид и формат номерных знаков стандарта 1993 года унаследован от советских дипломатических знаков. Они содержат букву и шесть цифр белого цвета на красном фоне. Номерные знаки машин представительства ООН содержат в формате белые символы на голубом фоне. Формат — буквы серии «UN» и три цифры.

В 2012 году началась выдача автономеров нового образца. Принцип остался неизменным — те же 3 цифры и 3 (физическое лицо) или 2 буквы (юридическое лицо). Однако появились важные отличия: слева добавлен флаг Казахстана и индекс KZ, а справа, в обособленном окне — код региона из двух цифр. Также изменился шрифт номеров — теперь он стилизован под международный. Номера были утверждены ещё в 2011 году, но выдача началась лишь в декабре 2012 года в Алма-Ате.

Остались и квадратные варианты номеров. На них окно с числовым значением региона помещается в левый нижний угол, над ним рисуется флаг Казахстана и код «KZ», три цифры ставятся в верхнем ряду, а буквы — в нижнем.

Номера высшего руководства и их служб

С конца 2012 года начинается выдача новых номеров. От прежних их отличает наличие с левой стороны государственного флага республики Казахстан и кода «KZ», написанного под ним вместо овала с кодом «KZ». Номер автомобиля Президента РК остался без изменений.

Номера МВД (полиции)

С конца 2012 года начата выдача номеров нового формата. Формат аналогичен новому формату номеров юридических лиц и мотоциклов, но выполняется тёмно-синими символами, используемое буквосочетание — KP , размер букв и цифр — одинаковый.

Версия номеров МВД 2015 года

С конца 2015 года автомобилям полиции и МЧС начали выдавать номера нового образца. Была возвращена цветовая гамма «тёмно-синий фон, белые символы», на номере слева помещается государственная символика, после чего следуют четыре цифры. Справа в отдельном окне располагается двузначный код региона.

Номера военных автомобилей

В июне 2015 года Комитетом административной полиции были утверждены новые номерные знаки для автомобильного транспорта Пограничной службы КНБ РК. В Пограничной службе КНБ РК пояснили, что фон номерного знака — зелёный — был выбран в соответствии с тем, что основным цветом символов Пограничной службы является зелёный цвет — флаг Пограничной службы, эмблема, фуражка. Thus, the Soviet and post-Soviet three-digit coding of the region is a thing of the past, the region code now coincides with the code on general civil license plates.

Diplomatic License Plates

In 2012, a new type of diplomatic license plate was developed. The color scheme of the numbers is saved, the state flag of Kazakhstan and the code “KZ” are placed on the left side of the number. After the flag is followed by a letter and three numbers in small print and three more numbers in large print, small numbers indicate the country code; on the right edge is a sticker with the date the number is valid. In two-row execution of a license plate, the letter and the first three digits are placed in the upper row, the last three digits in the lower row, the sticker is placed under the flag and the code “KZ”. These numbers began to be really issued only in the second half of 2015, while no stickers on the number fit.

New types of license plates are also introduced:

• For honorary consuls. The color scheme of the room is black and yellow (like non-residents). Format: flag of the Republic of Kazakhstan with a code, the combination of letters HC , four digits, a sticker. In double-row execution of a license plate, letters are placed in the upper row, numbers in the lower row, the sticker is placed under the flag and the code “KZ”.

• For cars participating in official ceremonies. The color scheme is the same as in diplomatic numbers, the Kazakhstan flag and the code “KZ” are placed on the left, then the word “PROTOCOL” is written over the entire length of the plate.
