The mountain is part of a mountain range passing through the entire island . From here originate the largest rivers of Taiwan - Zhoshui (濁水 溪), Zengwen ( 曾文溪 ) and Danshui (淡水河). Today it houses the eponymous national park, very popular among tourists.
The narrow-gauge railway rises to the village of Alishan (阿里山), and then early in the morning takes tourists to the observation deck on the Rushan Mountain (祝 山) at an altitude of about 2500 m with a view of Yushan, where they meet dawn.
The powerful typhoon Morakot at the end of August 2009 caused avalanches and landslides that damaged and in some places destroyed the railway, causing great damage to the entire region. The commissioning of the railway has been postponed indefinitely. The cost of repairs exceeds a billion dollars, and there are even offers to replace the railway with a cable lift.
