Georgian Olympics Protest
On August 9, Georgian President M. Saakashvili announced that athletes from the Georgian Olympic team located in Beijing at the 2008 Olympics , in connection with the Ossetian war, β are going to hold a protest rally to attract world attention to what is happening in Georgia today. According to the charter of the Olympic Committee, this will entail the disqualification of athletes . β [1] On the same day, the Georgian Olympic team, after meeting with the wife of the Georgian president, Dutch citizen Sandra Rulovs , announced that she was leaving the Olympics. The Georgian Olympic team, in accordance with the Olympic charter, could be disqualified for eight years. [2] In fact, the Georgian team stayed at the Olympics and participated in competitions on August 10. Reportedly, βafter a convincing requestβ by President Saakashvili, who had called the Olympians the day before to leave the Games, the athletes changed their minds and continued to participate in the Olympics.
