She began her singing career in the 1940s as part of the duet Scholten & Van 't Zelfde. Since 1945 , she worked with Henk Scholten, for whom the singer got married a year later.
In 1959, she won the Eurovision Song Contest, gaining 21 points and ahead of performers from the UK and France. After the competition, she recorded versions of her winning song in German, French, Swedish, Italian, which reached 4th place in the Netherlands and 11th in the Italian charts .
She later recorded several albums, including those with famous children's songs, and also participated in television projects.
