History

Initially , the house of the Resurrection Church of Princess Natalya Alekseevna was built on this site in 1711 . In 1817-1818, the architect Luigi Ruska built a modern Church of the Sorrows. On October 24, 1818, Metropolitan of Novgorod and St. Petersburg Michael consecrated it.

The church is built in the Empire style , inside it is a rotunda , the dome of which is supported by 24 ionic columns .

In the 1920s, the church passed to the Renovationists . On January 10, 1932, the church was closed, the building was transferred to the Museum of the History of Religion, and since 1970, it housed the city branch of the All-Russian Society for the Protection of Monuments of History and Culture.

In 1993, church services were resumed.

From the day of consecration until 1931, a miraculous icon of "All Who Sorrowful Joy" was in the church. When the temple was closed, the image was transferred to the church of the Holy Trinity on Stremyannaya , after its closure in 1937 - to the Transfiguration Cathedral [1] .
