Defense of Volokolamsk (1370)

Death of Vasily Ivanovich Berezusky from a spear

The defense of Volokolamsk is the defense of the Russians [1] of the city of Volokolamsk against the troops of the Lithuanian prince Olgerd November 26-29, 1370 . Olgerd attempted to take the city during the second campaign against Moscow. Volokolamsk defended the Russian garrison headed by Prince Vasily Ivanovich Berezuysky. The besieged successfully defended and even made a sortie , throwing Lithuanian troops over the ditch. Prince Berezusky was killed during the raid (he was killed when he was waiting for the Lithuanian prince Olgerd on a bridge near Volokolamsk, a certain Litvin slipped under the bridge and impaled the governor with a sulitsy), but the resistance did not weaken, and Olgerd was forced to lift the siege.

The delay of Olgerd near Volokolamsk enabled Prince Dmitry Ivanovich to organize the defense of Moscow. The presence of an unrecognized city in the rear restricted the possibilities of Olgerd. In addition, Vladimir Andreevich Serpukhovskaya and Oleg Ivanovich Ryazansky began collecting troops to help besieged Moscow, and ultimately Olgerd was forced to retreat beyond the boundaries of the Moscow principality.
