Biography

Born and raised in the Machuelito municipality of Ponce , Puerto Rico. In the early years of his life, he attended a music school , where he studied with interest inspired by Jesus Sanchez Eraso [2] . At the age of seventeen, he moved to New York [2] and in the first week of his stay there he became the vocalist of a sextet led by Roberto Garcia. [2] At the same time, he performed songs with the band Johnny Pacheco and other musical groups such as Orquesta New York and Kako All-Stars.

In 1967, Lavaux, together with Willy Colon organized a group in which he performed vocal parts. As part of this group, Hector Lavo recorded several hits, including El malo and Canto a Borinquen . Collaboration with Willy Colon ceased due to the fact that at the beginning of his musical career Lavo began to use drugs , which is why the singer was often late for the band's performances. At the initiative of Colon, the artists stopped performing together, but remained good friends and continued to record music together. Hector Lavo began his solo career by organizing his own group, in which he was the main vocalist. Separating from Colon, Hector Lavo wrote hits such as El cantante , Bandolera and El periódico de ayer . (The composer of El Cantante was Ruben Blades , and the songs of Bandolera and Periódico were written by Colon and Tite Kuret Alonso, respectively.) At the same time, Lavo was often invited to work as a member of the Fania All-Stars collective, for which he recorded several songs. [2]

In 1979, Hector Lavo experiences severe depression and turns to Babalao , the high priest of the religion of Santeria, to free himself from drug addiction. After the death of his father and mother-in-law and the tragic death of his son, Lavo begins to take drugs again. [2] Learning that he is sick with HIV , Lavo decides to take his own life and jumps from the hotel balcony, but survives. [2] Injuries resulting from a fall accelerate the onset of AIDS . After several unsuccessful attempts to return to the stage and release one album, he died in poverty on June 29, 1993 . [2]

In 2006, the biographical film "Singer" (El Cantante) was released. Marc Anthony starred in the role of Hector, and Jennifer Lopez played his faithful girlfriend Nilda “The Bugs”.
