Katayama, Ukio

Ukio Katayama ( Japanese 片 山 右 京 Katayama Ukyo:, May 29, 1963 , Tokyo ) is a Japanese race car driver , a participant in the Formula 1 world championships in car racing. Champion of the Japanese Formula 3000 of 1991 . Known for the fact that due to his small stature, he could not get into the cockpit of the Tyrrell car, but was adopted due to the high speed on the track.

Biography

Born in Tokyo, in 1986 began to engage in car racing in France . At the end of the 80s he returned to Japan, where in 1991 he won the Japanese Formula 3000 Championship. He started three times in the race “ 24 hours of Le Mans ” in 1988 - 1992 , never reached the finish line.

In 1992, he made his debut in Formula 1 thanks to the sponsorship of the Japanese concern Japan Tobacco . Not earned a single point, and in one race did not pass pre-qualification. The next year he moved to Tyrrell , where he performed until 1996 . The best season for Katayama was the 1994 season , when he finished three times with glasses and took 17th place in the championship. At the European Grand Prix in 1995, was injured in an accident at the start. After the 1997 season spent at Minardi , he left the championship.

Later he played in the Japanese championship of Gran Turismo, started again in the “ 24 hours of Le Mans ”, where in 1999 he took second place, speaking for the Toyota factory team.

Known for his love of mountain climbing , he repeatedly climbed the highest mountains of the world. In 2001, the eight-thousander Cho-Oyu conquered.

In December 2009, Katayama, as a training session before conquering the South Pole , climbed Mount Fuji . A strong wind caught him on the side of a mountain with two companions. A gust of wind tore the group off the slope. Both companions of the rider died. Katayama himself was not injured and was evacuated by rescuers. [one]
