Cyphomyrmex (lat.) - the genus of ants of the tribe of the fungi aquatic Attini from the subfamily Myrmicinae . Characterized by their close symbiosis with mushrooms. Working individuals are small, monomorphic (1.5β3 mm), antennae 11 segmented (13 in males). The stalk between the breast and the abdomen consists of two segments: the petiolus and postpetiolus (the latter is clearly separated from the abdomen), the sting is developed, pupae are naked (without cocoon). The nest consists of one cell-camera. As a substrate for mycelium, insect feces and pieces of fruit are used [1] .

Distribution
The genus is characteristic exclusively of the New World and is found only in Neotropics .
Genetics
The diploid set of chromosomes is 2n = 20, 32 [2] .
Classification
The genus belongs to a subgroup of lower fungus ants (7 genera: Mycetarotes , Myrmicocrypta , Mycocepurus , Apterostigma , Cyphomyrmex , Mycetosoritis and Mycetophylax ) and includes about 40 species (Schultz, 2000; Schultz & Meier 1995; Wetterer et al., 1998). The genus was first isolated in 1862 on the basis of the type species Cyphomyrmex minutus Mayr, 1862 .
